The films selected for the 20th Children’s Film Festival of Florianópolis reflect childhood in Brazil and countries worldwide

A total of 137 short films were chosen by the festival curators: 98 Brazilian films, from 18 states, and 39 films from 23 other countries.

A selection of 137 fictional, documentary, animated and experimental short films from Brazil and around the world, made for children of all ages, is part of the program of the 20th Children’s Film Festival of Florianópolis, which will be held from 16 to 24 October. The films selected were identified on 6 July on the event site (read at the end of this page). The entire program will be on-line and free of charge and available on the Festival’s YouTube channel and on the Festival streaming platform.

A total of 98 Brazilian films from 18 states, and 39 international films from 23 countries will be presented. The state of São Paulo is represented with 27 films, followed by Santa Catarina and Rio de Janeiro, with 19 and 15 short films respectively. Among the international films, France has 21 films, followed by Argentina with 5 shorts, and Hungry, with three.

The short films at this festival depict the various childhoods found in Brazil and the world, and their themes, approaches and aesthetics raise current debates.

“We have films that examine migration, while others discuss gender in childhood in a natural and spontaneous manner. Various shorts show the wealth of Indigenous peoples and the importance of respecting and protecting their ways of life. The environment is another theme. The group of films as a whole mirror thinking in Brazil and throughout the world”, affirmed Luiza Lins, festival director and coordinator of the curating group that included Gilka Girardello and Melina Curi.

In general, the films reflect a concern for transforming the world into a place in which differences are accepted and valued. The documentary, To My Friend, From Your Friend (2020, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea), by  Che Espiritu,  depicts an exchange of letters among children from different countries, and sensitively addresses the issue of prejudice. Meanwhile, the issue of childhood free of stereotypes is raised in Raone (2021, São Paulo Brazil), a documentary directed by Camila Santana.

The strength of Brazilian productions

The films in this selection have high technical quality and pertinent content. The Brazilian films include the shorts Jovem que Desceu do Norte [A Youth from the North] (2021, SP), by Ana Teixeira, a documentary in which adults, some of them elderly, recall their childhoods in Brazil’s North and Northeast before they migrated to São Paulo (SP). Moving declarations are interspersed with beautiful animations in an original style, which complement the narrations.

Two other films that demonstrate the strength of audiovisual production for children in Brazil are Eu me chamo Darwin [My Name is Darwin] (2020, SP), directed by Well Darwin, an autobiographical story, narrated by the author, about his difficult relationship with a childhood nickname, which is only revealed at the end of the film, sensitively problematizing racism. Another highlight is Ibiapaba Como Nascem as Montanhas [Ibiapaba How the Mountains are Born] (2021, CE), by George Alex Barbosa, a 3D animation with an Indigenous Brazilian theme, in which Apuã has her 12th birthday and is now responsible for saving her people and changing her own destiny.

“All the films in this festival have a special strength and quality. The curators made the selections based on certain criteria. We have a powerful group of films for the 20th edition”, said Luiza.

Latin-American films

“This year, the quality of films from Latin America also stood out. They present a wide thematic diversity of representations of childhood, languages, and aesthetics, which have a strong relationship with Brazilian children. We have various films from Argentina, Colombia and Mexico”, curator Gilka Girardello added.

Luiza Lins highlighted, for example, the Argentina animation Ailin en la Luna (2019, Argentina), by Claudia Ruiz, which has puppets and maquettes that tell the story of a tired mother and the relationship between mother and daughter expressed by means of a cantiga [song]; and the Mexican fiction film The Piñata (2020), by Verónica Ramírez,  which portrays the importance of play and that children have space to create on their own.

This year’s Festival has a significant number of films with children in the lead roles and who steer the theme.

“This proves that audiovisual works are increasingly inserted in educational environments, which after all, connect children and the world”, said Luiza.

The festival director also highlighted the selection of Brazilian videoclips for very young children, which was not common in previous editions.
